Symposium on Stem Cells : From Laboratory to Treatment of Diseases
Stem cells are unspecialized “master” cells that differ from other kinds of cells in the human body in that they have a unique capacity to multiply and differentiate into many types of specialized cells and tissues. The process by which dividing, unspecialized cells are equipped to perform specific functions—muscle contraction or nerve cell communication, for example—is called differentiation, and is fundamental to the development of the mature organism. It is now known that stem cells, in various forms, can be obtained from the embryo, the fetus, and the adult. A human adult stem cell is an undifferentiated cell found among differentiated cells in a tissue or organ; can renew itself and differentiate to yield the major specialized cell types of the tissue or organ. The primary roles of adult stem cells in a living organism are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found e.g. bone marrow, fat, skin, brain, muscle, blood and cornea.

The goal of this symposium is to address ethical, scientific and medical issues associated with Stem Cell Technologies with special emphasis on India. Prominent scientists working on Stem cells in India and abroad will be invited as speakers for this meeting. The meeting will also include poster presentation by students, post-doctoral research fellows, and junior scientists.

Topics to be covered:

 Adult Stem Cells
 Embryonic Stem Cells
 Stem Cells in therapy
 Basic Research on Stem Cells
 Legal and Ethical Aspects
Collection and Storage of Stem Cells
